Our team
Trusted providers of Information, Analysis, Advice and Assistance since 2011

David Hewitson
Chief Executive Officer
David Hewitson served in surface ships and submarines in the Royal Navy, prior to joining the mine action sector. From 1991 he conducted practical clearance of landmines in Afghanistan, Cambodia, Mozambique and Angola and established and managed field programmes. In 1995 he founded a commercial demining company and employed more than 3,000 people in projects all over the world. He was instrumental in bringing ISO management system principles into the mine action sector.

Colin King
Chief Intelligence Officer
Colin King has nearly 40 years of operational EOD experience, specializing in the disassembly and analysis of live munitions. He served as a bomb disposal officer in the British Army, with operational tours including the Falklands, Gulf, Bosnia and Kosovo. Colin instructed at the British EOD School and spent many years in military intelligence. He subsequently spent 17 years writing the works on landmines and EOD for Janes Information Group, and has been the technical adviser during the development of international treaties and conventions.

Steve Cox
Sales
Steve Cox combines 14 years of British Army experience, including delivering critical IMINT (Imagery Intelligence) with UAVs and work as a CEID Instructor in Afghanistan, with extensive experience managing high-profile government and global accounts, for companies providing the 'Janes Information products' and data insight analysis services. This unique background makes him exceptionally qualified to understand and address your specific needs regarding Fenix Insight's comprehensive service offerings.

Zoe Duhig

Our analysts
Our in-house team comprises experts with diverse and distinguished backgrounds, including former senior engineers from the Defence science and technology laboratory (Dstl), editors from Janes, humanitarian mine action operators, and a recipient of the Visiting Fellows Program at the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies. Together, they bring strong expertise in risk management, geopolitics, munitions analysis, and humanitarian operations, offering a comprehensive understanding of complex global challenges.
2025: Fenix Insight Online becomes METIS
We relaunched our flagship insight engine, formerly known as 'Fenix Insight Online,' under the new name METIS - Munitions, Events, and Technical Information System. This rebranding reflects the system's evolution since its inception in 2015, including the integration of advanced AI tools that have significantly expanded the scope of data collection and processing. METIS now delivers more comprehensive and detailed reporting to clients, enhancing decision-making across defense, humanitarian, and security sectors.
2023: Computer vision
In 2023, we added IRIS (Image Recognition Identification System) to our portfolio; a physical threat monitoring software which identifies landmines and other explosive ordnance from a Uncrewed Aerial Vehicle (UAV) based video feed or open-source media. Preliminary field trials in Ukraine during January 2024, demonstrated its capabilities in detecting landmines.
IRIS is also being trained to detect threats for other scenarios including firearms detection at public events, stadiums and venues, or educational establishments. Initial prototypes of the detection models are showing impressive accuracy.
2021: 3D Modelling
Fenix expanded our team in 2021 following external investment, to allow further development of our OSINT and AI technologies. This included the use of photogrammetry to create 3D models of some of our hardware collection; building datasets to facilitate Machine Learning processes.
Travel resumed, and Fenix Insight completed various consultancy projects around the world.
2020: AI integrations
During travel restrictions in 2020, we made the decision to focus more on the ‘Fenix Insight Online’ platform. We integrated cutting-edge AI technologies to supercharge and streamline our data gathering and processing, allowing our small team of human analysts to verify refined data, collated from millions of individual online sources.
In November 2020, The UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office formally declared the Falkland Islands to be clear of Landmines. Fenix Insight provided the Demining Programme Office (DPO) throughout the entire 11 years of mine clearance operations on the Falkland Islands.
2015: Fenix Insight Online
In 2015 Fenix started initial development on our revolutionary OSINT (open-source intelligence) insight engine. Beginning with a handful of test countries which included Ukraine, Mali, Nigeria and Colombia, we collated data allowing us to combine our munition records with mapping and analysis of open-source reports of munition use.
Results demonstrated that we could provide comparable reports on munition use generated from open sources, to those produced by traditional 'boots on the ground' methods, and our data was not constrained by country boundaries.
2013: Technical databasing
Fenix Insight’s first technical database of munitions was designed and built in 2013, to address the need for a reliable and detailed, online information and image repository for explosive ordnance.
Intending to meet the specific needs of the EOD sector, our technical munition records reflect the extensive experience in both military and civilian explosive ordnance intelligence, of our whole team of subject matter experts (SMEs). Our munition records have exceptional levels of detail (where this is available), and include diagrams, documents, sales material and original imagery.
2011: Founding of Fenix Insight
David Hewitson and Colin King founded Fenix Insight to run investigation, ammunition clearance and demilitarisation operations in many current and post-conflict zones around the world. In particular, Fenix Insight has worked with countries seeking to destroy stockpiles of obsolete and munitions that have become non-compliant, or with complex explosive remnants of war (ERW) issues; specialising in tasks that are unusual, important or otherwise significant.
Our clients include UK and other international civil and military government departments, leading humanitarian mine action NGOs and academic institutions.
